The College

Why choose Filton College?

You know more or less where you want to be, and you know that your first step in that direction is to get the right qualifications at a good college.

There are many different reasons why students choose Filton College. When you choose Filton College, though, it has to be for one reason ... because you feel it’s the right place for you.

It’s your decision ... and it’ll be for your own reasons. One thing’s for certain though - you’ll find it’ll give you excellent preparation for moving on to University or the world of work. You’ll meet a lot of interesting people both from the UK and abroad ... and it’ll be time of your life that you’re bound to look back on as one of the best!

So what is the College itself like?

Well, it may take you a little bit by surprise to start with. It’s a world within a world ... a community in itself!

Filton College is over 40 years old ... but one of the first things you’ll notice is how “new” a lot of areas look.

In fact, some of the buildings are brand new, like the Library and Learning Resource Centre, which is for all students to use. It’s equipped with dozens of PC and Mac computers, all with Internet and e-mail access. You don’t pay for using these. They’re available for you to use as often as you like and whenever you like.

Students on Performing Arts, Media and Art And Design courses also have full use of the Centre’s Digital Video Editing and Sound Recording facilities.

Our up to date, fully equipped science labs are also brand new ... as is our Health And Beauty salon...

Our brand new student social area, with its own restaurant and a coffee shop is also a good place to unwind.

What will Filton College do for you?

Well, however far you want to go ... whatever qualification, job or career you’re after, we have the programmes to set you off in the right direction.

The choice is entirely yours. You can study A levels or, if your goal is a particular job or career, you can work towards vocational qualifications.

On the other hand, if you see yourself moving onto Higher Education, Filton College has the route to get you there.

At this stage, you might be thinking, “Yes, I know what I want to do, but what if I haven’t got the passes I need to get in?”

Well, chances are you have.

Each year a fair number of students join us on what we call “entry level” or Level One. It’s a “starter year”, in which our level one support staff will help you reach the requirements.

One thing’s for certain - whatever you want to achieve in life, Filton College will set you off on the right road!

So what courses can you actually do at Filton College?

Let’s ask that another way. What do you want to do?

The choice is vast! Filton College is more than likely to have exactly the right programme to get you where you want to be.

For example, if you see yourself working in film, television or stage ... in the spotlight or behind the scenes, we’ve a wide choice of courses in Performing Arts, Media, Production, Communication and Film. As with all courses, all the facilities and equipment you’ll use are the same, or better, than you’ll find out there in the “real world”.

We’ve a great success rate, with many of our Performing Arts students moving onwards to some of the UK’s top Drama Schools.

If your leanings are more towards sports, we’ve courses such as the Sports BTEC First Diploma and BTEC National Certificate – the type qualifications you’ll need for careers in sports, leisure and recreation.

In addition, at Filton College you’ll find The British Academy Of Sports – which includes Football – both male and female, Golf, Netball and Hockey.

We have strong links with local teams like Bristol Rovers on the football side and Bristol Shoguns for rugby.

We exchange notes, share training facilities and techniques and have use of their astro-turf and grass training pitches.

Equally, when it comes to Rugby, we work alongside Bristol Shoguns ... and we’ve also forged links with Clifton RFC and Axa Sun Life for the use of their high quality training facilities.

These are just a few of the courses you can follow at Filton College. There are many many more.

.. and we even have our own Army Cadet unit where students undergo survival training and prepare for careers in the public services.

For details of the all, along with entry requirements, take a good look at our Course Details section. It’ll tell you everything you need to know.

Another important feature of Filton College is the fact that we’re a community college.

We get out into local cities, towns and areas to run courses ... hold demonstrations and events and introduce people of all ages to the concept of lifelong learning.

We also regularly invite primary and secondary school children into the college to see what college is all about.

At Filton College, we don’t just teach you, we work with you.

We want you to do well and gain as much as you can from being here.

Whatever kind of extra help you need is always available ... and that doesn’t just mean help with your coursework - careers advice, welfare, counselling ... whatever support you need, it’s always available.

From its own on-site centre, the Student Union also plays an important role in counselling and support. Of course, they also organise social events, days out, clubbing trips ... even trips abroad to places like France and China. They also organise the Student Ball ... a major event on the student’s calendar!

At Filton College, we also believe it’s important to celebrate and reward student achievement. We also hold an annual end of year awards ceremony which is an important date in the college calendar!
